Adi Kailash Yatra: Journey to Divine Heights

From a young age, I had a to-do list to visit Adi Kailash Yatra with my beloved grandfather. When I decided to visit Adi Kailash yatra with my 67-year-old grandfather, I was kind of unsure about the proper guidance. After some research I still needed the proper guidance, and information. With an old man, I knew it was not going to be easy! With the help of the TTH Trek Coordinator, I got all the information in one place. From optimal timings and accommodations to weather conditions, health checkups, and permits, every detail was meticulously handled.

All the information was shared in a very detailed manner and arrangements were truly commendable. As they say, the journey is more beautiful than the destination. I would say the journey was really beautiful and of course, so was the destination.

The Adi Kailash, also known as Chota Kailash, is one of the five sacred mountain peaks collectively known as Panch Kailash. Among these, Adi Kailash is the second most sacred, located in the Pithoragarh district of Uttarakhand near the Indo-Tibetan border. Adi Kailash is a revered pilgrimage site in Hinduism, and it holds significant spiritual importance due to its mythology and divine associations. The sacred mountain Adi Kailash, is situated at an altitude of 5,945 m (19,505 ft). Pilgrims believe it is the dwelling place of Lord Shiva, and its serenity and majesty inspire deep devotion and reverence.

The route is covered from Gunji/Nabi village to Jonglingkong by drive. The Yatra takes pilgrims through breathtaking landscapes and spiritually significant sites. According to local legends, the sacred mountain was a site visited by many ancient sages and seers. These sages, drawn by the mountain's serene and divine energy, performed intense penance and meditation here.

The tranquil Parvati Tal is located close to Trek. It is well-known for providing magnificent views of the surroundings. For those who enjoy the outdoors and spirituality, the hill's tranquil atmosphere, lush greenery, and abundant vegetation are ideal. It is said that Goddess Parvati used to bathe in Gauri Kund, making it a holy site for devotees. The lake's pristine waters are believed to have purifying qualities, and a dip in the lake is considered to cleanse the soul of impurities. One can also visit Bheem ki kheti.

Bheem Ki Kheti, or Bheem’s Field, is a significant spot encountered during the Adi Kailash Yatra. It holds both historical and mythological importance. According to Hindu mythology, Bheem Ki Kheti is associated with the epic Mahabharata. It is believed that during their exile, the Pandavas, especially Bheem, spent some time in this region. Bheem, known for his immense strength and valour, is said to have tilled this land.

Close to Adi Kailash is Om Parvat, a mountain with naturally occurring snow patterns that resemble the sacred 'Om' symbol. This phenomenon is considered a divine sign and reinforces the spiritual sanctity of the region. According to the belief, the 'Om' symbol is a cosmic sound and the primordial vibration of the universe, connecting devotees directly to the divine. To witness the Om Parvat yatra, the journey starts from your stay point Gunji/Nabi to Navidhang. It is at a distance that can be covered by drive.

There are also references to Adi Kailash that can be found in ancient Hindu scriptures and texts. These references highlight the mountain's importance, its divine connection, and its significance in Hindu mythology and history.

Not only the divine abode but it is also believed that the Adi Kailash is linked with their cosmic love story and Hindu mythology, centering around the divine union of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. While the grand wedding of Shiva and Parvati is traditionally associated with Mount Kailash, Adi Kailash is considered as a significant site in their divine narrative. The mountains and surrounding areas are believed to have witnessed the divine presence and the events leading up to their celestial union.

It is believed that the gods and sages blessed the couple at this sacred site, showering their union with divine blessings. During their marriage ceremony, the peaks are said to have echoed with heavenly music and hymns resonating across the majestic heights of Adi Kailash. Their divine union symbolized the perfect balance of male and female energies, known as Ardhanarishvara.

With that, Kailash Mansarovar is one of the most revered pilgrimage destinations in the world, located in the Tibet Region. The sacred Mount Kailash, considered the abode of Lord Shiva, and the pristine Lake Mansarovar, are believed to be the source of spiritual power and purity. Lipu Lekh Pass is a high-altitude mountain pass in the Kumaon region of Uttarakhand, India. It serves as an ancient trade and pilgrimage route connecting India to Tibet and is one of the key points on the historic Silk Route. This route was instrumental in the exchange of culture, trade, and religion between the Indian subcontinent and the Tibetan plateau.

Trekking to the Himalayas is always the best journey. Pilgrims visit not only from India but from all over the world to immerse themselves in the divine energy. The trek in holy mountain is seen as a journey of devotion, where devotees connect themselves with powerful spiritual vibrations. Worshippers perform rituals and offer prayers at Parvati Tal, Om Parvat, and other significant spots, seeking blessings for marital bliss, harmony, and spiritual growth.

The main highlight of any trek journey will always be either the places you get to explore or the views that you will get to witness only once in your life. But to explore and experience all that scenic beauty, you must remain safe and healthy, which can be possible only if you do the proper intake of nutrients, and most importantly, of all consume water in a perfectly adequate amount. It’s an obvious yet the most ignored fact that Hydration is very important for trekking, it’s like the backbone of the whole trip. Which is why every trek leader’s first question at the start or end of their trek is - How much water did you drink today? Half of the time, the pattern of the answer remains the same, where some of them just give sheepy smiles, some tell numbers but are in doubt, and some of them have no idea whether they have drunk it at all or not.
